Why Your Ekadashi Date Is Wrong If You Live Outside India

Ekadashi falls on different dates in different cities, and that's not an app error. Here's why location changes the tithi date, with a worked example.

Your app says Ekadashi is Thursday. Your mother in Chennai says it’s Wednesday. A cousin in Toronto says Thursday too. All three of you can be right at once. Ekadashi isn’t a fixed date broadcast from India — it’s tied to sunrise at the specific place you’re observing it, so the correct date depends on your time zone and your own city’s sunrise, not on converting someone else’s date across time zones.

What Ekadashi actually is

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi, or lunar day, counted from the new moon or full moon. A tithi is defined purely by angle: it’s the time it takes the moon to move 12 degrees further ahead of the sun than it was at the start of the tithi. That crossing, the exact moment the angle hits the next 12-degree line, happens at one universal instant. Someone in Chennai and someone in Chicago experience it at the same moment in absolute time.

The date it falls on is a different question entirely.

Why sunrise, not midnight, decides the date

For naming a tithi-based observance day, panchang tradition doesn’t use midnight as the line between one lunar day and the next. It uses sunrise, the same convention the Surya Siddhanta panchang tradition has followed for centuries. The tithi that’s active at sunrise is the tithi that names the whole day, for ritual purposes, until the following sunrise. So the real question for “is today Ekadashi” isn’t just when the tithi boundary happens, it’s whether that boundary lands before or after sunrise at your location.

That’s the part that makes location matter. The tithi boundary itself is one fixed instant for the entire planet. But every city has its own sunrise, hours apart from every other city’s. A boundary that falls comfortably before sunrise in one place can land after sunrise somewhere else, simply because the two cities’ sunrises aren’t happening at the same clock moment relative to that instant. Same universe, same tithi crossing, two different observed dates.

A worked example across four cities

As an illustrative example (these are hypothetical numbers, not a specific real calendar date), suppose a tithi boundary, the moment Ekadashi begins, falls at 4:40 am IST on a given morning in Chennai. Converting that single instant into local time for a few diaspora cities:

In Chennai, London, and Houston, the boundary lands before that day’s sunrise, so the new tithi is already active when the sun comes up, and that’s the Ekadashi day in each of those cities. In Sydney, the boundary doesn’t cross until after sunrise, so the previous tithi is still active at sunrise there, and Ekadashi shifts to the following day. Four cities, one tithi boundary, two different calendar dates, and every one of them is correct for where it’s calculated.

This is also why a table computed for a single Indian reference city and then just relabeled with local time zones doesn’t reliably work. Converting a clock time across time zones tells you when the boundary happens where you are. It doesn’t tell you where that boundary falls relative to your sunrise, and that relationship is the actual rule.

Why “just check with family back home” doesn’t reliably work

Family in India, a WhatsApp forward, or a wall calendar are all anchored to a sunrise in India. That’s accurate for India. It isn’t automatically accurate for London, Houston, Toronto, or Sydney, because the rule was never “use India’s date everywhere.” It was always “use your own sunrise,” and India’s date is only a proxy for that if you happen to live in India. The same applies to a generic app default: if the calculation quietly assumes an Indian reference city instead of your actual location, it inherits the same gap.

Finding the correct Ekadashi date for your city takes two things: the tithi boundary’s exact time, and your own city’s sunrise on the days it might fall. If the boundary is close to sunrise, even 20 or 30 minutes on either side can flip the date, so a rough time-zone conversion from an India-based table isn’t precise enough when the boundary is near sunrise.
